NC mountains get snow overnight, black ice still a threat

BOONE, NC (WBTV) - A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Ashe and Watauga counties until noon for elevations above 3,000 feet in the high country.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia says colder air is surging in behind a strong storm system is bringing accumulating snow showers to the higher ridges of the western slopes along the NC/TN border, according to the NWS.

Click here to see a video of the snow coming down in Beech Mountain Tuesday that was posted to the WBTV News Facebook Page.

Accumulations are expected to be between 1-2 inches and the snow should taper off by noon Wednesday.

The NWS said the biggest hazard in the morning is black ice which creates hazardous driving conditions.

Windy conditions remain Wednesday with the high expected to be in the low 30s.

Dalton announces run as Gov. Bev Perdue won't seek re-election

RALEIGH, NC (WBTV) - North Carolina's Governor Bev Perdue has officially announced that she will not seek re-election for governor later this year.

Within several hours of making her announcement, Lt. Governor Walter Dalton said he would seek the governor's slot while Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx only said he was considering his political future.

In a statement released on Thursday at 12:01 p.m., the first-term Perdue said "I am announcing today that I have decided not to seek re-election."

In the four paragraph statement, Perdue said that she was not one to back down from tough fights, but stated that "we live in highly partisan times, where some people seem more worried about scoring political points than working together to address the real challenges our state faces.

Mountain snow could mean a boost for businesses

BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) - What was shaping up to be a tough week for the mountain tourist industry got a whole lot better in just a few hour Tuesday afternoon.

Temperatures plunged and there's snow falling down across the high country.

The heavy rain Monday night made a mess of the ski slopes, putting them in critical condition. The industry has been hurting for the past month because of warm weather, but now the white stuff is building back up on the slopes thanks to nature and some man-made help.

And it could turn out to be a good weekend for tourism after all.

First it was rain, then there was fog, followed by blue skies... and then snow.

Folks on the slopes said it was crazy, and if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. They were hoping for that bad weather snow.

And bad weather is good weather for shops, lodging, restaurants...

Celebrating winter, without much winter

BLOWING ROCK, NC  (WBTV) – What a difference a year makes.  This time last January, much of North Carolina was still in a deep freeze with many parts of the mountains covered in snow and ice.

This year, the only snow is on the slopes at the ski resorts, with most of that man-made.

"It has been a strange winter, "said Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce Events Planner Billie Rogers.

Rogers has been busy helping to get the annual Winterfest Celebration under way. Events were scheduled to start Thursday night with a dinner and then the outside activities will gear up through Sunday.

"We would love to have snow but we will be fine and plenty of people will have fun."

One of the highlights for Winterfest every year is the Polar Plunge into Lake Chetola at the resort of the same name.

"Most years our grounds crew has to go out and drill a hole in the ice," said Marketing Manager Marsha Greene.

Rain, wind, snow all possible across the region Tuesday

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A soggy Tuesday is in store for most of us, with the rain becoming heavy at times, and converting to snow in the mountains overnight.

WBTV's Ashley Batey says even a few rumbles of thunder are possible.

Rainfall amounts will vary between a quarter of an inch and half an inch depending on where you are in the viewing area, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.

But Batey said as the rains move out, gusty, even dangerous winds will remain.

The NWS has issued a wind advisory for most of the viewing area until 6 p.m.
